Reveal Findings

US – Numerous bilateral small cysts with comet-tail artifact.

Reveal Discussion

US is important in the evaluation of clinically detected thyroid nodules. A thyroid nodule in a child has a higher risk of malignancy than in an adult. Risk factors for thyroid cancer include: previous irradiation (Hodgkins disease), thyroiditis, and family history. Solid nodules with irregular margins, calcifications and hyperemia which are larger than 1 cm should undergo cytologic evaluation. Thyroid cysts account for 15-25% of thyroid nodules. True epithelial cysts are rare. Most cysts represent aggregates of colloid within follicles or degenerated macronodules which have accumulated fluid, colloid or blood.
