Reveal Clinical Notes

Pathology – Adenomatous hyperplastic thyroid nodule on a background of chronic lymphocytic inflammation (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis).

Reveal Findings

US – Solid and cystic mass in the right lobe of the thyroid which is hyperemic on Doppler.

Reveal Discussion

Adenomatous hyperplastic thyroid nodules differ from true thyroid adenomas since they do not have a complete fibrous capsule and they are often multiple. Both thyroid adenomas and adenomatous hyperplastic nodules are well-circumscribed and slow growing; central necrosis is often encountered with increase in size. Lesions may contain coarse calcification. Adenopathy is usually absent.

Differential diagnosis includes colloid cyst, parathyroid adenoma, thyroid carcinoma.
