Diagnosis

Meningioma

Findings

MR – Axial T2, T2-FLAIR and post-gadolinium T1 images demonstrate large dural based mass with effacement of the left lateral ventricle, contralateral midline shift and early isolation of the right lateral ventricle. Mild calvarial hyperostosis is also present.

Discussion

Meningiomas are rare intracranial neoplasms in children; <2% of meningiomas occur in pediatrics. Pediatric meningiomas are associated with prior irradiation, neurofibromatosis type-2, and Gorlin syndrome. Patients often present with seizure (33%), headache (13%), ataxia (10%), and hemiparesis (10%).

Pediatric meningiomas are located supratentorial (64%), infratentorial (16%), intraventricular (12%), and spinal (8%).

Meningiomas behave differently in children compared to adults. Pediatric meningiomas have a male predominance, a high incidence of intraventricular location, and less often have a dural attachment.
