Diagnosis

Distal Ureteral Stone

Findings

US – Hydroureter with shadowing echogenic focus and pseudoureterocele.

Discussion

Ultrasound plays a crucial role in the evaluation of renal colic. This is especially true in children because the lack of ionizing radiation. Ureteral stones associated with hydroureter are easily visible by sonography in the upper and lower ureter – bowel gas can obscure stones in the midureter. In one study, US demonstrated ureterolithiasis in 40 of the 43 patients with confirmed ureteral calculi (sensitivity 93%, specificity 95%, positive predictive value 98%, negative predictive value 86%).
