Anterior Fontanelle Bone

CR – Large flat bone nearly fills the anterior fontanel.

Bones in the anterior fontanel and adjacent sutures are unusual but not uncommon normal variants. Anterior fontanel bones may be present at birth or appear later. These bones are often single, large and flat usually without diploic space. The usual mechanism for fontanel closure is centripetal marginal growth of the frontal and parietal bones; the anterior fontanel bone also exhibits centripetal marginal growth. Anterior fontanel bones do not interfere with normal skull growth or shape and become fused with the adjacent bones by 5 years of age.
