Right Frontal Osteomyelitis

CT – Coronal reformat shows destruction of the right frontal bone.

MR – Permiative osteolysis of the right frontal bone. Marrow and periosteal edema and inflammation are present with dural enhancement.

Osteomyelitis of the skull is rare, accounting for about 1% of all osteomyelitis. It usually occurs as a complication of trauma or sinusitis but can also occur as a result of retrograde septic thrombophelbitis. Its complications can be life threatening though the initial symptoms and signs are subtle. Intracranial complications include meningitis, cortical vein thrombosis and venous infarctions, and cerebritis.
