Diagnosis

Torticollis

Findings

CT – Coronal and shaded volume reformats show marked asymmetry of lateral atlantodental interval with malalignment of the latateral masses of C1 and C2.

Discussion

Torticollis is related to abnormal articulation of C1 and C2 giving rise to rotation of the head in one direction and lateral tilt in the opposite direction. In infancy, torticollis is usually related to pathologic contraction of the sternocleidomastoid muscle or congenital vertebral anomalies. In children and adolescents, it is most often related to inflammation or trauma.
