Epidermoid Cyst

Clinical Notes

Pathology – Thin walled cyst with smooth surface containing white-gray sebaceous material.

US – Hypoechoic, hypovascular mass with scalloping of outer table of skull.

CT – Hypodense mass with excavation of skull. No intracranial involvement.

Epidermoids are not true tumors but rather dermal inclusion cysts lined by a stratified squamous epithelium and encircled by an outer connective tissue capsule. The external surface is typically smooth or lobulated with a pearly appearance. Epidermoids are slow growing benign lesions, occurring with equal frequency in males and females.
